Hydrologic Cycle
Precipitation either evaporates into the atmosphere, gets taken up by plants, flows into streams, or infiltrates the ground and recharges aquifers. Groundwater flows from inland locations to lakes, streams, or coastal waters. On the seaward side, denser salt water enters sediments and establishes equilibrium with fresh groundwater. Tides and mixing along the freshwater-saltwater interface results in seawater circulation through the sediments. The Holy Quran mentioned this system in the verse: (And We send down from the sky water in measure, and We give it lodging in the earth, and lo! We are able to withdraw It) [23/18].
Nutrient- and sediment-laden fresh water from the Fraser River in British Columbia rides up and over salty ocean waters, which are beginning to march upriver during flood tide. The interaction of the 2 water masses of different salinities and densities in the estuary creates underwater turbulence and mixing that naturally flushes and energizes the coastal system.
The Holy Quran has mentioned this fact, Allah Subhanahuwataala says: (And He it is Who hath given independence to the 2 seas (though they meet); one palatable, sweet, and the other saltish, bitter; and hath set a bar and a forbidding ban between them) [25/53].
In the image, we see a 700 meter high iceberg with a peg extending for 3 kilometers below water level. Iceberg pegs have always been the cause for ship accidents, as sailors never doubt that icebergs could have pegs extending to such depths.
A peg may weigh more than 300 million tons. This fact was not known at the time the Holy Quran was revealed, But Allah Almighty pointed it out and expressed precisely in the verse of Al Naba (The Tidings) [Al Naba: 7] as He said (And the mountains as pegs). Can you see how mountains were compared to peg screwed into the ground?
